Until 2 August this is the river entire. Eight rods have the run of everything — the Upper Beat and The Gorge are both part of it, not held back and sold separately — over 60 km of water and sixty-plus marked pools on the lower river alone, from the last kilometres before Stóra-Laxá meets the glacial Hvítá right up through the canyons. And all of it is fished from the Lower Lodge: one base, no moving on, the whole river within reach of breakfast.
From 2 August the river divides at Hundastapi. The Lower Beat is then the water up to and including Hundastapi, and the Upper Beat goes on sale above it as its own 3-rod section. The rate drops on exactly that date for exactly that reason — the package stops being the whole river.
A guide comes with the rod and cannot be declined — one for every two rods, which is close attention on water that rewards it. The Lower Lodge is the catered base: newly built, over the water ten minutes from Flúðir, with a hot tub, a glass-fronted sauna, a bar and a dining room looking onto the river.
One footnote before the season proper: 18 June fishes the upper water only, on 4 rods, with the first cast at 09:00. It is a full three-night period at the season’s top rate, sold inside this package and priced with it — but it is not yet the whole river on 8 rods. Those periods run from 21 June.
